Drum and zill Classes with Master Gavin The goal of the class is to instruct students as to the methods and styles of the most common belly dance and zill rhythms, common instruments used, standard drum practice methods, optimum styles of working together in a circle, drum circle ettiquette, ettiquette in regards to dancers, and organization of drum circles for live performance or fun. The standard class set up will be as follows – Introduction of a new rhythm or rhythms, As class progresses- A review of rhythms first (30 min) (for both zills and drums) based upon class proficiency for both zills and drums Rhythm sheets, room, and chairs will be supplied by Azita (thank you Azita!). IMPORTANT: The student will need to bring his or her own drum and/or zills to class, as the student will be learning on his or her own instrument(s)!!! There is no plan for spare drums or zills to be supplied, although such may be able to be purchased from Azita. |
About Gavin: Gavin has a lifelong interest in music which began when he started playing the guitar at age 9. Since then, he hobbies from time to time with other instruments, including both the Shakahachi and Native American Flutes, the Australian Didgeridoo, and percussion instruments like the Djimbe and Dumbek drums. Gavin has taught Arabic style rhythms for drum and zills for three years now, was a member of the drumming core group INTENSITY, and has played in several restaurants, and many many drum circles. His brand of grass-roots-style simple explanations, with individual attention and positive encouragement, have helped many people begin to enjoy the art of arabic-style drumming. |
